United’s €45m target reportedly given €240,000 pay-rise to ward off interest

Reported Manchester United target William Carvalho is said to have seen his monthly pay rise considerably following the interest in him.

Reported Manchester United target William Carvalho is said to have been given a pay-rise at current club Sporting Lisbon, although his release-clause and contract length remain the same.

Portuguese newspaper O Jogo reports that the 22-year-old defensive midfielder has seen his monthly wage rise from €10,000 to €30,000 following the considerable interest shown in the player this season.  That equates to a rise of €240,000 a year.

Prior to his departure from United, David Moyes had reportedly sent scouts to watch the player upwards of 15 times, and he was believed to be readying a huge summer bid.

But it is now being suggested that the man tipped to replace him – Louis van Gaal – has his eye on alternative players, more specifically Roma’s Kevin Strootman.

Either way, it seems Sporting have acted to bring William more in line with Europe’s higher earners in his age-bracket. Although in truth he could still take home considerably more if he were to move to one of the elite clubs said to be interested – with the likes of Liverpool and Juventus also linked with the Portugal international.

For now he remains a Sporting player, but if he performs as well in the upcoming World Cup as many are suggesting, he could still be attracting a number of bids this summer.

The question is, will one of them be from United?
