The German cup final between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund was a match full of quality and passion as the two giants went head-to-head.
A number of recognisable stars took to the field, with reported Manchester United targets Toni Kroos and Marco Reus lining up on opposite teams with only one goal in mind.
After rumours had circled in the German press of dissatisfaction in Munich, Pep Guardiola’s side dispelled such speculation as they held their nerve to deservedly beat Jurgen Klopp’s men 2-0 in extra-time, the goals coming from Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller.
At the final whistle, amid the jubilant celebrations, German international Kroos took a moment to console fellow international teammate Reus after the latter was visibly upset at the outcome.
It was a heartfelt moment from one rival towards another, though the duo could end up playing at Old Trafford together as early as next season.
The Red Devils have reportedly earmarked Bayern star Kroos as the man to lead their midfield next season. The 24-year-old’s contract runs out in 2015, and with no signs that he will sign a new one, United's manager-elect Louis Van Gaal is said to be keen for the club to get a deal done.
Reus, on the other hand, has been phenomenal this season, scoring 16 goals and assisting and further 13 in 26 Bundesliga starts.
Despite Dortmund’s insistence that their star man will stay at the Westfelenstadion this summer, Bayern Munich’s German dominance may pave the way for an exit.
