In a season where Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has claimed a number of personal awards, the prestigious European Golden Boot award may just be the best of the lot.
Following Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid, La Liga duo Lionel Messi (28) and Diego Costa (27) failed to match the 31 goals scored by Luis Suarez.
Cristiano Ronaldo, on the other hand, had the opportunity to claim the award outright as Real Madrid hosted Espanyol in their final La Liga match of the season. Unfortunately for the Portuguese superstar, he pulled out of the match during the pre-game warm up as a precaution over a niggling injury.
The weekend’s situation means that Suarez and Ronaldo will both share the award after scoring 31 goals each, unless Torino’s Ciro Immobile - who currently stands on 22 Serie A goals - manages to pull off a last-day miracle.
The European Golden Boot award is no more than Suarez deserves after impressively bouncing back from his previous troubles over the past few seasons. The Uruguayan international has become an idol for the Reds, and his near-perfect on-field behaviour this season has seen him become a role model for a number of youth players on Merseyside, too.
Following his outstanding Premier League campaign where he netted 31 goals and added a further 12 assists in just 33 starts, a number of reports questioned his Liverpool future amid speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.
Fortunately for Liverpool and their supporters, Suarez has seemingly resisted the bright lights of the Santiago Bernabeu and is concentrating on beating his 31-goal tally next season at Anfield.
