Sevilla star Ivan Rakitic has a whole host of top European clubs after him this summer following an extraordinary campaign in Seville.
The 26-year-old midfielder has set La Liga alight this season, notching 12 goals and adding a further 10 assists in 29 league starts for the club.
Reaching double figures in both goals and assists is a rare achievement for midfielders, and the fact that Rakitic achieved it at an unfancied Sevilla side makes it all the more impressive.
His performances throughout the season haven’t gone unnoticed, and a number of clubs including Premier League duo Liverpool and Manchester United have taken an interest.
The Red Devils are on the lookout for a midfielder to solve their renowned problems this summer, and Croatian international Ivan Rakitic would be the perfect option.
His balance, intelligence, eye for goal and quality forward passing are just a few of his outstanding traits, and under the influence of soon-to-be boss Louis Van Gaal, the €40m star would shine.
Unfortunately for Man United, any deal bringing the Croatian to Old Trafford appears increasingly unlikely as a result of a key lifestyle demand from his wife.
According to the Spanish press Elgoldigital, his wife, Raquel Mauri, is unwilling to leave Seville – her birth city - and her line of work as a local hairstylist.
Ivan Rakitic’s wife’s demands have caused the midfielder to rethink his options and it appears a stay in La Liga is on the cards, although the city of Madrid – and the two giants Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid – certainly isn’t out of reach.
It could prove to be a bitter blow for the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool. However, in United’s case, eliminating Rakitic as a potential target early in the summer allows the club to focus all of their efforts on fellow targets such as Toni Kroos and Kevin Strootman.
