Schmeichel was one of the greats of the Sir Alex Ferguson era at Manchester United, making almost 400 appearances for the club after arriving from Brondby in 1991. The Dane's last game for the Red Devils was the remarkable Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 1999, but he's kept a keen eye on the club in recent years and has now had his say on the managerial situation at the club.
United moved to sack David Moyes in April after a dismal ten month stint in charge of the club, and the favourite to succeed him is the Holland manager Louis van Gaal, who made his name in spells with Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich during a long and successful career for the 62-year-old.
His style has drawn comparisons to that of Ferguson, and Schmeichel says that he would offer another strong personality in the dugout, which the club needs to get back to it's past glories having finished in seventh place, but also suggested that the Dutchman wouldn't be content with simply finishing in the top four.
"The club needs a strong man to steer us back up," Schmeichel said, "We have finished seventh, so the top four is a good target to set yourself for next season. But Van Gaal will not want to accept the top four - he will try and win [the league]."
Should van Gaal be appointed as manager, he will be charged with rebuilding United after a shocking season, and with a huge transfer budget reportedly available, Schmeichel believes he should target two German internationals - Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels and Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos.
"United have got [Phil] Jones, [Chris] Smalling and [Jonny] Evans but going by what the media are saying, Hummels is a target. That's a good starting point to bring him in. He has good leadership skills and he is a fantastic defender. He's someone we've been looking at for a couple of years and he's been heavily connected with United," said Schmeichel
"We need to bring in a midfielder -- players like Toni Kroos who has been mentioned for a long time and he would be a great addition. We need players that can install or restore the confidence in the club and squad as well," the Dane added.
