England and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure are hailed as two of the finest midfielders in the world but which performed better statistically in the Premier League this season?

Liverpool and Manchester City fought for the Premier League title right down to the wire this term with the Citizens being crowned champions last Sunday on the final day of the season.

31-year-old Ivorian, Yaya Toure scored an impressive 20 goals across 35 appearances in the Premier League this season and whilst 33-year-old England captain Gerrard scored only 13 in 34 appearances, a closer look at their overall play demonstrates how influential both were for their teams.

Gerrard made 13 assists for goals for his teammates at Liverpool compared to Toure’s 9 for City, Gerrard accumulated a shot accuracy of 51% on target compared to Toure’s 42% on target and the Englishman created 67 chances for the Reds to Toure’s 40 chances created for City.

However, Toure’s pass completion rate was an astonishing high 90% to Gerrard’s still very high 86% however Toure averaged more passes per game with 71.5 on average to Gerrard’s 65.3. . The pair took exactly the same number of shots per game on average (1.8 per game) across the season, and the Liverpool hero made a marginally higher number of key passes per game on average, 2 per game, to Toure’s 1.1 on average per game.

The Ivory Coast international was more successful with his dribbling, averaging 1.2 completed dribbles per game to Gerrard’s 0.4 per game but that could be attributed to Gerrard’s slightly deeper position this term under Brendan Rodgers. Subsequently, Toure was dispossessed more often than Gerrard, a total of 31 times across the season to Gerrard’s 18 times.

Overall, Yaya Toure proved the more fruitful in front of goal and, playing in a more attacking role predominantly, he was the more dangerous but, crucially, Gerrard was the more efficient, both offensively and defensively and the more creative and influential across the season for Liverpool than his Manchester City rival.

Defensively, Gerrard made a total of 98 tackles to Toure’s 54 and the Reds skipper made 91 clearances to Toure’s 33 for Manchester City, as well as making more than twice the number of interceptions, 48 in total, to Toure’s 24 interceptions for City. Gerrard also conceded fewer free kicks than his City counterpart, with his 33 fouls conceded across the season to Toure’s 39 in total.
