Agent confirms Italian interest in Vermaelen

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen may leave in the summer and his agent admits Italian teams are waiting.

Thomas Vermaelen has refused to discuss his future and with each passing day there is more and more speculation that the FA Cup final will mark the end of his Arsenal career.

It has been a trying campaign for the 28-year-old who has battled injuries and been kept out of the side by the partnership between Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

Having made only 14 appearances all season, Vermaelen is expected to start the FA Cup final against Hull on the bench as he is nursing a knee problem sustained against Norwich.

Napoli have been repeatedly linked with the Belgian star in the Italian press and it now seems that there could be a queue of teams in Serie A ready to embrace him.

"Several Italian teams have shown an interest in him," Vermaelen's agent admitted in La Repubblica.

"We are waiting for the World Cup to be over before we discuss his future."

It is being suggested in Italy that Roma will be unable to keep hold of star defender Mehdi Benatia in the summer as Chelsea, Manchester City and a host of other clubs prepare bids.

The money brought in from the sale of their current defensive rock could be used for Roma to finance a swoop for Vermaelen.

But Inter and Juventus are other possible destinations for Vermaelen as well as Napoli, who were repeatedly linked to him in January and could be choosing between the Belgian or Liverpool's Daniel Agger.
