Today French club AS Monaco confirmed that Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov has signed a one-year extension in the principality. The former Manchester United forward has been a great success since he moved to France in January.
When he first joined Claudio Ranieri’s side, the move looked like it would hit the bricks before it even got started as Ranieri was not overly keen in recruiting the 33-year-old, but his views soon changed. Colombian striker Radamel Falcao had been ruled out with a serious knee injury and wouldn’t feature again for the whole season, but for Berbatov the move began so show fruit very quickly.
There is only one game to go this season, but in just 11 starts Berbatov has scored six times this season, three at the Stade Louis II and three on their travels. He scored the winner as Monaco beat Nice in both the Coupe de France and the league and he also scored the opener as Monaco could only draw one each against Guingamp, a result that relinquished the title to Paris Saint-Germain.
Obviously his six league goals and two league assists has proved to the Monaco staff that he is a player worth holding on to as Monaco prepare for a double assault on both the Champions League and Ligue 1 campaigns.
It is unclear whether either Claudio Ranieri or Falcao will still be around on the principality next season, but we now know that Berbatov will at least survive to the end of the 2014/15 season. When the original deal was first announced it was thought that the forward was only on loan from Fulham, but it soon turned out, when the French league confirmed the deal, that Berbatov had been signed on a one-year contract.
Perhaps with a full pre-season on “the rock” Berbatov will be able to fully settle into his surroundings. It is unclear who his coach will be next season, or if he will ever get to partner Falcao while in France, but at least he knows he is at a club that wants and appreciates him. With that knowledge the Monaco fans can look forward to a motivated Berbatov next season.
