Wenger compares selection choice to Nasri, Van Persie decisions

Arsenal boss says he isn't going to let off field issues affect on pitch results.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has important decisions to make when it comes to the FA Cup Final, but he is determined to choose on football reasons alone.

Two players in contention to play are Lukasz Fabianski and Bacary Sagna, who have both failed to agree new contracts.

So the Wembley showpiece could be their final games for the Gunners, yet the Frenchman is not worried about their commitment wavering, and feels both are in top physical and mental shape to perform.

Wenger has been here before. Two seasons ago it was star striker Robin van Persie refusing to commit, and a season before Samir Nasri was angling for a transfer, but Wenger still selected him in a home game against Liverpool days before he was sold.

The manager sees a likeness in scenario, telling Arsenal.com: "The answer is exactly the same [as for Sagna]. Honestly, I have always acted like that [selected players who might be leaving] because [if I didn't] it would basically mean the guys are not professional.

"I have done that with Nasri, with Van Persie, with everyone when I knew they left or had a good chance to leave, I always played them. If they deserve to play, they play."

Sagna is almost certain to feature, while Fabianski has played every round in the FA Cup run so far.

Wenger's stance is fair, if having watched the players at close quarters he believes them to remain at the top of their game despite a potential departure being imminent.

It's something Manchester United should have tried with Paul Pogba in 2011. Sir Alex Ferguson got so frustrated with his refusal to sign a new deal, he alienated him altogether and refused to give him a chance, which effectively ended any possibility he may change his mind.

While bowing out at the top in a cup final would be an ideal way for Sagna and Fabianski to quit, a taste of success at long last may just persuade them to change their mind after all.
