Liverpool enter 'fierce battle' to land 22-year-old Dutch star - Three questions & reaction

Feynoord defender Stefan de Vrij has been linked with a move Anfield, despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

According to reports in the Daily Star, Liverpool are ready to bolster their squad for next season by entering a 'fierce battle' to land Dutch international Stefan de Vrij.

The 22-year-old has been in great form this season and earned a well-deserved call up to the Netherlands World Cup preliminary squad which is due to go through a rigorous selection process before being named ahead of the finals in Brazil.

Nevertheless, after playing a huge part in Feynoord's lofty second placed finish which saw them finish just 4 points off champions Ajax, he should be confident about landing a place on the plane to Brazil when the finalised squad is announced.

We take a look at three questions the Liverpool fans, Spurs and United too, may have about the latest hot prospect to be linked to their club.

What kind of player is Stefan de Vrij?

The Feynoord defender is certainly a player that will interest Premier League clubs largely due to his physicality and desire to be first to every ball. A player renowned to 'like a tackle' the defender has also be credited with first-rate concentration skills as he is rarely undone by a mistake.

He has proved an asset at the other end of the pitch too, after netting four league goals in 32 league games.

How much will he cost?

A difficult question as neither the report in question, or previous information has been leaked about how much Feynoord would want for the player.

In terms of the current market, I would hazard a guess a young international of his stature at a high-profile club in his home nation would not come cheap. In fact, I would guess that he may become one of the more expensive names Liverpool may look at this summer.

Will he improve the current team?

After conceding so many goals last season, I feel that Liverpool are the team that could benefit the most from this transfer, especially as the player is likely to integrate with the ethos of the current side.

He will be hungry for success and with the right coaching, he could be a huge success.
