On this day: Ferdinand retirement, Carrick POTY and Chelsea win Europa League

Rio Ferdinand

On the 15th May 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea and Manchester United.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 15th May 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 15th May 2013…

Chelsea Champions

Chelsea won the Europa League after beating Benfica 2-1 in Amsterdam. Rafa Benitez had led the club to the final after Roberto Di Matteo oversaw Chelsea flopping in the Champions League.

Goals from Fernando Torres and Oscar Cardozo had the scores at 1-1 heading into the final minute and the game looked destined for extra-time.

But Branislav Ivanovic, playing at centre back in place of the injured John Terry, scored a late winner to send Chelsea into raptures.

Almost a year to the day later and Benfica are again reeling from Europa League final defeat, this time on penalties to Sevilla in Turin.

Caveat for Carrick

Manchester United players voted Michael Carrick as their player of the season. The England international said of the accolade:

"Obviously this means an awful lot. I work with the lads every day and train every day. We’ve got an unbelievable team spirit and players from all over the world come and fit in and make a real effort to fit in. For them to give me the vote for this means an awful lot. It really is special for me."

On the same night Adnan Januzaj was voted the club's best young player - a year on and he certainly seems to be living up to that billing.

Rio not going to Rio

Rio Ferdinand announced his retirement from international retirement. The United defender's future for England had been in doubt for some time after his omission from the Euro 2012 squad - but he now made the decision formal.

A year on and he faces a similar decision regarding his career after deciding to leave Manchester United in the summer.
