Tom Lawrence upstaged James Wilson for Manchester United's under-21s last night.
Tom Lawrence made his first team debut for Manchester United a week ago, but he turned out to be only a footnote as teammate James Wilson grabbed all the headlines.
A week on, it was Lawrence finding the net at Old Trafford in a high profile game, upstaging a below par Wilson, who was struggling for fitness.
Lawrence, 20, scored an impressive opening goal for United in the under-21 final against Chelsea, only to see his side slip to a 2-1 loss.
Yet his goal was a beauty, cutting inside to leave Nathan Ake sliding on the turf, curling the ball into the back of the net, a composed finish which brought smiles from the watching Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.
Lawrence is a Welsh youth international, and will hope to follow Giggs for club and country, and his nimble footwork certainly brought back memories of the club's number 11 early in his career.
The youngster has spent most of the season out on loan, with a spell at Carlisle United, followed by a period with Yeovil Town, between January and April before being recalled.
Manchester United veteran Darren Fletcher had positive words about Lawrence, stating that the loan spells have been the making of him.
"Tom Lawrence has come back from his loan, and come back a man. A few of them have done that," he told SkySports.
Here's a look at how United fans reacted on Twitter to his display:
Lawrence looks to have a bright future, very technical and quick feet, could do with a few gym sessions though #mufc— OriginalWakey (@OriginalWakey) May 14, 2014
