In January both Liverpool and Arsenal were being linked with a move for Barcelona winger Isaac Cuenca. The youngster had a breakout season for Blaugrana in 2011-12 but it has been a struggle for the 23-year-old since.
He has suffered with several injury problems for the past couple of seasons - including a season long loan spell at Ajax being cut short after a month.
But he is now fighting fit and obviously hoping to make an impact at Barca. But it seems Arsenal and Liverpool might have a chance to gamble on the talented but unfortunate attacker this summer.
His current deal expires in 2015 and he spoke about his future yesterday, after starting his first game since April last year.
“It’s not easy to play for Barca, especially when coming off injury. It hurt my chances having not been able to since I resumed training. But I understand, because the team is fighting for a title and the fans don’t want to risk it. I have a year left on my contract and I don’t know if I’ll continue. What I feel like doing is playing, enjoying my football and scoring goals.”
His future therefore does not seem to be with his beloved Barca - so should Arsenal or Liverpool continue their interest in the player?
There is no doubting Cuenca's talents as a footballer but he has now spent the majority of the past two seasons on the treatment table and it would certainly be a gamble to bring him in from Catalonia.
Arsenal have no real need for him and Liverpool would just be adding an injury prone asset. He might very well be moving on from Barca but the thought of him ending up at Anfield or The Emirates seems very unlikely.
It seems that his boat has sailed regarding a move to one of the Premier League's big boys.
