How Chelsea and Manchester City disappointed this season

Both teams performed well this season; City winning two trophies, but there are also key areas of disappointment. Here are the reasons why.

Chelsea impressed in the Champions League by making it to the final four and finished in third position in the Premier League table. However, they could have won both competitions if their tactics would have been a bit more flexible.

With players like Hazard, Oscar, and Willian, the Blues have probably the best attacking midfield in the Premier League. The team has definitely the quality to create a lot of chances and to score a lot of goals.

Their coach Mourinho however normally preferred a defensive playing style. This style might be the right tactics against technical strong top teams, but Chelsea seem to have internalised that system so much that they had problems to dominate and score goals against smaller teams.

In that way they lost more points than just the four that they were behind Manchester City in the table at the end. If they had played a more attacking style like Liverpool or Manchester City, they could have won the Premier League. They definitely had the players for that.

Also in the Champions League Chelsea played a very destructive and defensive style, especially in the away game against Atletico Madrid, which ended 0-0. Instead of going for a predecisive away goal, they only focused on not conceding a goal themselves. How wrong this tactic was, showed in the second leg after Atletico’s equaliser, when Chelsea – once again – wasn’t able to put enough pressure on the opponent and lost the match.

Chelsea’s attacking players can be compared to a Ferrari, which Mourinho is driving with 80 km per hour on the highway. If they change their playing style and use their potential in a better way, then they would have very good chances to win some titles with these players next year.

Manchester City on the other hand played an attacking style in the Premier League and was awarded for that by winning the league. However, they disappointed in the Champions League. In the first round they became second in their group behind Bayern, which is a decent enough result. After that they had to face Barcelona in the next round and the two matches against them were absolutely unpleasant from the English side.

Manchester City’s coach Pellegrini worked successfully for many years in the Spanish league and played several times against Barcelona. He knew exactly how the Spanish team would play against them. How is it then possible that his team didn’t have a chance against the Spanish champions? In both matches they struggled to score a single goal against the Catalunian team, netting only a late consolation in a 4-1 aggregate loss, although the same players scored regularly every weekend in the Premier League.

At the time when the two teams played against each other Manchester City was supposedly in a better condition and everybody expected at least two tight matches. Losing in such a hopeless way, made them one of the biggest disappointments of this Champions League season.

Both Chelsea and Manchester City had a good season, but they missed out on making it a perfect season. Their coaches are not totally without blame for that.
