Expected £32m Chelsea signing runs risk of being tainted like former club hero ahead of arrival

Diego Costa is set to sign for Chelsea, but could he arrive with an unwanted reputation.

Chelsea are hoping to sign Diego Costa ahead of the World Cup, with it claimed this week that a fee has been agreed at £32 million.

Costa still has Atletico Madrid to focus on however, where he is enjoying a tremendous season to date.

That could end with a historic double silverware, with Atletico in with a chance of winning a first La Liga title in more than 25 years, and winning their first ever Champions League trophy.

Remaining are two games, against Barcelona in La Liga, where they must avoid defeat, and a Champions League Final against Real Madrid.

Atletico's players have admitted their chances in both are at 50/50, and their chances of winning both, one, or none, are evenly poised.

So whichever way you look at it, the biggest moments in Costa's season are yet to come, and are the ones he will be defined by.

Will he arrive at Chelsea a champion, or be tainted as a two-time loser?

Just ask Michael Ballack what that's like, the former Chelsea star whose incredible achievements with Bayer Leverkusen saw them fall short at the last hurdle in all competitions in 2002.

The team who beat them in the Champions League Final, yes Real Madrid. And Ballack went on that year to lose the World Cup Final too, although he missed it with suspension.

Surely lightening can't strike 12 years on with Diego Costa, can it?
