We have witnessed a multitude of fine attacking displays this season, with a number of outstanding strikers on show.
Here we take a look at the most prolific forwards in the Premier League – who has been the most clinical over the course of the campaign?
I must just note two restrictions, the contenders are 1) required to have made 10 or more appearances, and 2) required to have scored at least five goals.
|Team||Goals||Conversion Rate (%)||Appearances||Minutes Played|
|Carlton Cole||West Ham||6||28.57||26||845|
|Dwight Gayle||Crystal Palace||7||25.00||23||882|
|Sergio Agüero||Man City||17||19.77||23||1,539|
|Danny Welbeck||Man Utd||9||19.57||25||1,459|
|Robin van Persie||Man Utd||12||19.35||21||1,584|
Carlton Cole’s position at the top of this list will surprise the vast majority of Premier League fans. Having been released and then re-signed by West Ham this season, the Englishman went on to score a total of six goals, converting just under one third of his chances.
Crystal Palace’s Dwight Gayle also deserves a mention. Having broken the club’s previous record transfer fee, the youngster initially faced a number of critics. Nonetheless, he ended up top scorer for the club, despite starting only eight Premier League games.
Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge have been outstanding all season, contributing an outstanding 52 goals to the Reds’ title challenge. It’s no real shock that the duo feature at some point, although perhaps you’d expect the former to be higher than tenth.
Sergio Aguero is included too, despite spending almost the entire second half of the campaign on the side-lines. With 17 strikes in just 23 appearances, his goals per match ratio is also rather impressive.
