It is consistently was reported that Kroos will be one of van Gaal’s main targets and that he might be more convinced to join the Red Devils under the Dutch coach. In fact the opposite may be true.
It may be correct that Toni Kroos establishing himself as a regular for Bayern when Louis van Gaal became their coach, but the relationship between them by far isn’t as good as reported. In fact, Kroos might even consider not to join Manchester United if van Gaal would be his coach there.
The biggest sports website in Germany Sport1, ran an article with the title “Does Kroos shy away from van Gaal?” that United’s chances of signing Bayern’s midfielder would probably sink if they hired the Dutch coach.
The news site thinks that Kroos might have even preferred to play under United’s former coach. “For Moyes Kroos would have been the absolute request player. The Scot observed the 24-year old a couple of times in the stadium. With van Gaal, Kroos can’t be sure of the same appreciation. In contrast, there are some clear doubts about that.“
The fact that Kroos played more often for Bayern under van Gaal is more the merit of Bayer Leverkusen’s coach Heynckes, who formed Kroos at that time while he was playing for Leverkusen on loan. After his great development with the West German team everybody at Bayern wanted him to come back to their team.
However, his time there under the new coach van Gaal wasn’t as easy for Kroos as Sport1 also mentioned in the article. “At Bayern Kroos always seemed to be a little bit tentative, hesitant, and insecure under the strict observation of the Dutch general. Van Gaal had another favourite: Thomas Müller. Kroos had to play under van Gaal often as a winger. Kroos won’t have forgotten that.“
Of course a lot of things have happened since then. After van Gaal, Heynckes took over and he was already Kroos' mentor at Leverkusen. Consequently he was the perfect coach for Kroos to develop because he gave him exactly the security and self esteem that Kroos lacked under van Gaal. Apart from that he let him play in the central midfield and not as a winger anymore, which of course benefitted Kroos’ playing style a lot more.
German newspapers have already reported that van Gaal might be more interested in signing his former favourite Müller from Bayern rather than Kroos, if he really becomes United’s new coach.
Right now Müller also seems to be less satisfied at Bayern as Guardiola doesn’t give him a lot of playing time. Kroos however is most of the times a regular starter under the Spanish coach, which under van Gaal might not be like that anymore.
Playing under the Dutch coach really doesn’t seem to be an extra argument for convincing Kroos to join Manchester United this summer.
