Manchester United want to sign Toni Kroos for the next season, but apparently another Bayern star could be more interested. Their possible future coach is the reason for that.
During his time as Bayern coach from 2009 to 2011 Louis van Gaal was asked about his favourite line up at the German team. His simple answer was “Müller plays always.”
Müller and van Gaal definitely have a special relationship. It was the Dutch coach who promoted Müller from the second team and made him one of the stars of the team.
After his first season at Bayern he was even selected for the German national team for the World Cup in 2010 and scored five goals there. Since then he is one of the top stars at Bayern and the national team.
However, Guardiola is not as convinced of his abilities as his foemer coaches was. Under the Spaniard, Müller has played only in 13 of 33 Bundesliga matches over the whole time of 90 minutes. Also in the Champions League he has let him play only in four matches over the distance.
In the last few weeks several German newspapers like Bild and tz have reported that Müller might join his former mentor, if van Gaal becomes the new coach of the Red Devils. Especially Bild thinks that the player has already made up his mind. “Allegedly the top goal getter of the 2010 World Cup is interested in joining Manchester United, if van Gaal becomes their coach.”
How special the relationship between the Dutch coach and Bayern’s striker really is showed an interview with Müller at the Audi Star Talk a couple of weeks ago when they showed him a trailer about what van Gaal had said about him.
In this trailer van Gaal described Müller as “geil” which means both excellent and horny in German, and said that Müller is “geil” in the attacking area and “geil” on his wife Lisa. Müller laughed out loud and reacted in the following way: “He is nuts. A special guy, a special coach and for me also a special person.”
Kroos definitely didn’t have such a close relationship to van Gaal as Müller and allegedly they didn´t have a good relationship at all. Müller and van Gaal however still have a very close relationship, which makes it a lot more likely that the striker could join him at United this summer.
His current coach Guardiola has already reacted to the speculation: “I can’t imagine that Thomas leaves the club. He is an important player and according to my opinion he’s going to stay here.”
He might not want to lose the player, but Guardiola is also very far away from repeating van Gaal’s statement that Müller plays always.
