Report: Van Gaal wants Dutch international in new-look United defence

Feyenoord

A report claims Louis van Gaal wants to bring Bruno Martins Indi with him to Old Trafford this summer.

Louis van Gaal could pair Bruno Martins Indi with Mats Hummels in a new-look Manchester United defence next season according to reports.

The Mirror claims Martins Indi is on the Dutch coach’s radar if he does ultimately take over at Old Trafford as is widely expected.

The 22-year-old Feyenoord defender will travel to Brazil this summer as part of Holland’s World Cup squad, and with both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic leaving United this summer, he could follow his international coach to England.

The same report claims United are keen on Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, which is no surprise given the German star’s ability and reputation in the game. But it would take a huge bid to prise him away from the Bundesliga.

Martins Indi is equally adept at centre-back or left-back and has featured a number of times in both positions for his club this season.

He ended the most recent campaign having made 31 appearances for Feyenoord, scoring two goals in the process.

With Luke Shaw tipped to arrive for a reported £27million, United’s defence could look considerably different next season. But for now it is all about getting the manager in place, with contrasting reports suggesting if and when van Gaal will be officially announced as David Moyes’ permanent replacement.

But if that news does finally come, expect the rebuilding work to begin in earnest.
