Whilst everyone is expecting an influx at talent at Anfield, there may be a few players who could make way...
It has been an interesting season at Liverpool with the side performing beyond all expectations by finishing just two points behind Manchester City at the top of the table and secure Champions League football for the club next season.
There is expected to be some transfer activity at the club during the summer and there has been much talk about who is coming into the club, but what about potential high profile names that have played a part this season, who could be on their way out?
Luis Suarez’s future is inevitably going to attract some speculation again this summer as Liverpool try and keep hold of the Uruguayan who scored 31 goals this season. But here is a look at a few others who may have a question mark hanging over their heads this summer:
With Steven Gerrard being deployed in a deeper, quarterback-like role in the second half of the season, it has been difficult to see where the Brazilian fits into the side. Lucas has always looked more comfortable in the deeper role for the Reds, and when pushed further forward it has looked a bit more of a challenge. Whether manager Brendan Rodgers will think about rotating between Gerrard and Lucas at times next season with the demands of the Champions League to think about remains to be seen. But at the age of 27, it could be the ideal time for them to cash in on the Brazilian.
There has been quite a bit of talk over Glen Johnson’s future this season as his contract runs out in the summer of 2015, and Liverpool will be very reluctant to let him leave on a free transfer. Also, they will want to reduce his wages which could be a sticking point in any negotiations for a new deal, and there have been times this season when his performances have come in for a lot of criticism. Whether Liverpool identify a new full-back to replace him could depend on whether he gets a new contract or not, but his future is certainly an interesting one to keep an eye on.
Agger was subject to a lot of speculation and interest last summer with both Barcelona and Manchester City reported to have been interested in the Liverpool vice-captain. Mamadou Sakho was brought into the club last summer so he certainly has competition for his place in the side, and after a season at the club, the Frenchman will be putting in a serious challenge for that place after adapting to life at Anfield following his big-money move from PSG. Defensively, changes are expected in the summer after the side conceded 50 league goals, and given that Agger has been in and out of the side, a lot of the time down to injury, his future may be under the microscope.
