Roma are reportedly considering a move for Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira, suggesting he could be a possible replacement for Kevin Strootman should the latter move to Manchester United.
Reports in Italy claim United have made a £30million bid for Strootman despite the star currently being out with a cruciate ligament injury. And now Calcio Mercato claims Roma have joined the race for the German international.
The Khedira claims appear to originate from German newspaper Bild, and if true, it adds credence to the suggestion that Strootman will be one of Louis van Gaal’s first signings if, as expected, he takes over at United.
The 24-year-old midfielder is an outstanding talent and has been linked with United many times in the past. There were even claims the club failed with a January bid, not surprising given that he only arrived in Italy last summer.
But following Il Tempo’s claim that United had made their move for Strootman, it could be more than coincidence that Roma are now tipped to bring in a Real Madrid star who occupies a similar position on the pitch to his Dutch counterpart.
Both players have seen their campaigns blighted by injury, but it appears they may become part of this summer’s transfer merry-go-round.
One thing is for sure, if van Gaal does take over at United and makes that call to one of his most favoured international stars, Strootman will have a big decision to make, as will Roma if a big enough offer comes in.
