Chelsea could benefit in several ways if Barcelona win La Liga this weekend.
The La Liga title race goes right down to the wire this weekend with a crunch match between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona at the Nou Camp.
If Atletico win the game, they’ll be crowned champions but if Barcelona win the game, they’ll take the title on goal difference and there are very good reasons that Chelsea need Barca to win in front of their own supporters.
The Blues have two very clear interests in the current Atletico Madrid side; Thibaut Courtois and Diego Costa.
In the case of Courtois, a title win would more than likely compel Atletico to secure the Belgian for a fourth season, on loan or otherwise, who has been described as the best goalkeeper in the world by manager Diego Simeone this season.
A defeat means Courtois heading back to Chelsea, angry, bitter and with a point to prove.
Petr Cech’s injury means there is a chance Courtois could start the season as number one at Stamford Bridge, which is what he’s asked for and Jose Mourinho would likely prey on that disappointment and turn it into something positive.
In the case of Costa, it’s fairly similar.
Chelsea are yet to officially confirm that they have agreed a deal with Atletico Madrid over the sale of Costa and the finer details of any deal will be easier and quicker to get through if Atletico aren’t crowned champions.
A title win for Atletico will make them more determined to keep Costa if a deal hasn’t already been agreed and it also created the natural knock on effect of celebrations, which will prevent the Blues from talking directly to the player.
It’s not all about players who could be coming to Chelsea but also players who could be leaving.
Again, there has been no official announcement but there have been numerous reports in the Spanish press that David Luiz has agreed personal terms with Barcelona ahead of a summer move.
A title win not only has the potential to save Tata Martino’s job, it could convince him that he doesn’t need Luiz whereas title heartbreak could prompt the club to follow through on any deal as quickly as possible.
It’s going to be a great game this weekend, with knock on effects either way.
