Revealed - Our Premier League Player of the Season

Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City stars feature as candidates.

The Premier League may have finished for another season but there are plenty of talking points to have come from the campaign.

Manchester City responded to wrestle the crown back from Manchester United, who would never have imagined in a million years that they would go from first place to seventh following the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

To make things worse, Liverpool played out of their skin and were unlucky not to pip City to the title with that slip from captain Steven Gerrard in the game against Chelsea likely to be spoken about for years.

There are some obvious candidates for player of the season and we’ve taken a look at five of the main contenders.

Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)

While several will talk about that slip, Gerrard was the model captain throughout the season for Liverpool. He kept the side organised, he man managed his teammates effectively and he scored important goals at important times with a world class performance away at Manchester United.

Eden Hazard (Chelsea)

Hazard stepped up last season in a way that some Chelsea fans may not have been expecting. While Jose Mourinho damned his attacking options in terms of strikers, Hazard popped up with important goals and performances which helped keep his side in the title race and their Champions League pursuit.

Yaya Toure (Manchester City)

Without Yaya Toure, Manchester City wouldn’t have won the Premier League title for the second time in three years. When he gets up to full speed, there is literally no stopping him. He’s the complete player; he scores, he creates and he protects possession.

Luis Suarez (Liverpool)

The Liverpool striker has been collecting player of the season awards left, right and centre. His goalscoring exploits were phenomenal, when considering that he was banned at the start of the season. Suarez matured in several areas, cutting a more mature figure than in the 2012/2013 season.

Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)

Sturridge had a great season at Anfield with 21 important goals, continuing his impressive form since he first joined the club. He was the highest scoring English player, which means it will be remarkable if Roy Hodgson doesn’t start him at the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

Winner: Yaya Toure

Toure gets the nod for us because he was directly responsible for City’s title victory. He’s an unstoppable player in so many aspects and sometimes gets overlooked for strikers who score more goals.
