Manchester United's bedrock of their past success will be no more after this season.
Edwin van der Sar's name will go down in history as one of the most accomplished goalkeepers ever to represent Manchester United.
A 2008 Champions League winner, he belongs to a very select group alongside Alex Stepney and Peter Schmeichel who have lifted the trophy in United colours.
The duo will both depart the club this summer on free transfers, Vidic already sealing a transfer to Inter Milan and Ferdinand's future presently uncertain.
Van der Sar, now a commercial director at Ajax, used his Twitter account to pay tribute to the pair, whose defending allowed him to set a Premier League record for minutes without conceding a goal in 2009.
His comments were echoed by current United midfielder Michael Carrick, who posted the following message:
1st Vida now Rio, we've shared so much.. Both 2 of the very best defenders of ALL TIME and I don't say that lightly, #ThePerfectPartnership— Michael Carrick (@carras16) May 13, 2014
