Manchester United target Toni Kroos' chances of perfect farewell increase

Toni Kroos Germany

The German Cup Final could be the last game Toni Kroos plays for Bayern Munich, and his chances of playing have just increased.

Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos' future remains unresolved heading into the World Cup, but he has one game to play for his club still.

This weekend is the date of the German Cup Final, between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, a perfect showpiece with a grudge to round off the season.

For Robert Lewandowski, it will be his final match in Dortmund colours before his transfer to Bayern is confirmed in July, but he is not likely to be the only player on display for who the match could turn into a farewell for.

Toni Kroos is Manchester United's top summer target according to numerous reports, and with his refusal to so far sign a new contract to stay in Munich, the game could be his last in Germany.

Kroos has made 35 starts for Bayern this season, sitting on the bench on six occasions.

But times he has been dropped include big moments; the Champions League second leg at home to Arsenal, and the last match in the Bundesliga against Borussia Dortmund.

Pep Guardiola has great faith in him, but Kroos is clearly not beyond being left out for such an important final, not in a squad as talented as Bayern's.

An injury to Bastian Schweinsteiger means Kroos' chances of starting the final are even more likely. It was Schweinsteiger who kept Kroos out of both the important games mentioned.

Bayern failed to win either of those, and Guardiola may have learned, particularly in the Dortmund match which they were beaten 3-0, that Kroos is now undroppable.

But Schweinsteiger's race against fitness means he is unlikely to make the same mistake.

So if Toni Kroos does land up with this being his last game at Bayern, he can look forward to playing a starring role, rather than fearing missing out on his last game for the Bundesliga winners from the bench.
