Former Crewe Alexandra player Nick Powell had been enjoying a great season at Wigan Athletic and had been getting a much better rub of the green compared to his Manchester United teammates.
Powell had scored 12 goals in 42 appearances for The Latics this season including three goals in the Europa League. He had been a small positive for United in what was otherwise a shocking season.
However the United loanee missed Wigan's crucial second leg play-off semi-final game against Queens Park Rangers on Monday night as he had previously been in court that day pleading guilty to a drink driving offence. On the 20th April, Powell was stopped for drink driving after he was spotted driving down the road at 3:15 am without his lights on. Powell was breathalysed and found to have 54mg of alcohol in his breath - the legal limit is 35mg.
Powell has now been banned from driving for 14 months and also received a £5000 fine. Wigan meanwhile lost 2-1 after extra-time in a thrilling encounter with QPR. They took the lead through James Perch before Charlie Austin equalised with a penalty sending the tie into extra-time. Austin then poked home what turned out to be the winner in the 96th minute following a flick on from Bobby Zamora.
Despite this setback for Powell his season at Wigan will not have gone unnoticed and will most probably attract interest from top flight clubs next season. With United set to invest heavily in the summer his chances at Old Trafford will still be limited. However he could be shipped out on loan again with Wigan keen on retaining him although Swansea City are interested in a permanent deal.
