'I'm not happy with my season' - Arsenal linked Alessandro Matri on troubled Serie A campaign

Alessandro Matri was linked to Arsenal last summer, and they were right not to take the plunge.

A multitude of strikers were linked to Arsenal last summer, which made it all the more bizarre they only signed one, unproven 20-year-old Yaya Sanogo.

So far that isn't a move which looks to have paid off, but they at least did save themselves a bit of grief by being a little discretionary.

One of the players linked with a transfer to the Gunners by The Express, was Juventus forward Alessandro Matri.

10 goals last season in limited starts for the Bianconeri illustrated why he was on the cusp of the Italian national squad, but a disastrous season this time around has put paid to those hopes.

Matri was snubbed by Arsenal, and signed with AC Milan instead. That proved to me a less than inspired decision.

He scored just one goal in 19 appearances after an £8 million switch, and was sent out on loan to Fiorentina in January.

In Florence he saw a slight improvement, and scored five goals in 19 games, with two on his debut.

Yet his return a meagre six strikes from 38 appearances, Matri knows he has not been up to standard.

In quotes reported by Corriere dello Sport, Matri acknowledged this, stating: "Surely I'm not happy with my season, I know I could do better. It is not right to have any regrets, but I could and I had to do more."

With Arsenal relying so heavily on Olivier Giroud all season, another forward so surely would have been helpful. But at least they did not compound their shortcoming by wasting £8 million on Alessandro Matri, leaving more money in the pot for what fans will hope will be a true solution this coming summer.
