'He's been suffering problems for weeks' - Arsenal deal for Benzema in doubt?

Spanish website AS has revealed that Real Madrid star Karim Benzema has been suffering from a troublesome injury to his left knee, a problem he’s been suffering with over the last few weeks.

The news outlet ran a story which showed the £20 million Arsenal target on his way back from a Madrid clinic, where he had tests on the problem ahead of Real Madrid’s final league game and the World Cup.

“Real Madrid’s French striker Karim Benzema attended a clinic in La Moraleja in the north of Madrid this morning to determine the extent of the injury he’s suffering in his left knee - He’s been suffering problems over the past few weeks,” writes AS.

Caution will be the weapon of choice for Carlo Ancelotti now that the La Liga title has passed his team by, with the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid under two weeks away.

The player will also have an eye on the World Cup and following that, a summer which could see him leave the club.

Should Real Madrid press forward and sign a high profile striker like Sergio Aguero or Luis Suarez, it makes the idea that Benzema could leave much more believable.

Arsenal have been linked with him throughout the season but Arsene Wenger is one of the most meticulous and careful managers in the game and if Benzema is carrying a recurring problem in his left knee, it will concern the Arsenal boss.

Wenger has always been shrewd in the transfer market and careful with his big money investments.

The club does need a centre forward but Wenger is the sort of boss that would prefer to sign a cheaper, lower profile player with no recurring injuries if he believes it will be more beneficial for his Arsenal side.

Real Madrid’s involvement in the Champions League final and France’s involvement at the World Cup suggests that if Benzema does have a serious problem, he’s unlikely to get it treated until after the tournament in Brazil so he’s available for his country.

That increases the chance that if Arsenal go after a £20 million deal, he won’t be available for the start of pre-season and could miss the start of the Premier League season.

Needless to say, that’s something that Wenger would take the criticism for.
