Belgian international Romelu Lukaku played his last game for Everton yesterday as he completes his successful loan spell on Merseyside.
The Blues’ striker joined Roberto Martinez’s side on a one-year loan deal after Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho didn’t feel he was ready to contribute at Stamford Bridge this season.
Chelsea’s loss has certainly been the Toffees’ gain as the blue half of Merseyside have benefited greatly from Lukaku’s presence. The 20-year-old has netted 15 goals and added a further six assists in 29 Premier League matches, a stat which makes him Europe’s most effective U21 striker.
Ironically, Chelsea on the other hand have struggled up top, and it was their profligacy in-front of goal which allowed Manchester City to overtake them and claim the Premier League title.
Everton would love to have Romelu Lukaku back at the club next season. However, the likelihood of that is slim given the financial restraints at the club. It is therefore fitting that the Chelsea loan star went out with a bang before returning to Stamford Bridge, and he did just that, netting his side's second as they cruised to a 2-0 final day victory at Hull City.
Romelu Lukaku has undoubtedly enjoyed himself at Everton, and he later showed his appreciation to the club and its fans by posting a touching message on his Instagram page. He said: “What a great way to end this season. I really thank you from the bottom of my heart for those many good moments that we had together. God bless you all.”
