The England left-back has recieved much support from current and former players following his retirement from international football
A clutch of high profile footballers have spoken out in their support of Ashley Cole after his retirement from international football was announced last night.
Cole took to social media site Twitter to confirm rumours that his England career was finished after he was informed by Roy Hodgson that he had been omitted from the 23 man England squad to go to Brazil.
Since he has been supported by a host of well-known current and former footballers.
The likes of Fabrice Muamba, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Micah Richards and Gary Linekar were all quick to pay tribute to the 33-year-old left-back’s ability, whilst England U21 international, Ravel Morrison, believes Hodgson has made a mistake by not picking Cole.
His current teammate Isaiah Brown, who is very highly rated by the Chelsea staff and an England youth international, also expressed his shock at Cole’s omission.
The Chelsea left-back has missed out on the squad due to Hodgson’s desire to bring through the young players, a policy Cole agrees with, and his lack of first-team opportunities at club level.
Cole has spent most of this season playing second-fiddle to Cesar Azpilicueta for Chelsea, who Jose Mourinho has opted to utilise at left-back, and has only made 17 Premier League appearances for the club he has been at since 2006 this campaign.
As such, his England place has come under threat from Everton’s Leighton Baines and Southampton’s Luke Shaw, who have been amongst the most in-form players in the Premier League, and he could not do enough to stop the pair from overtaking him in the England pecking order.
Cole has still enjoyed a stellar career despite this latest disappointment at international level.
He has been amongst England’s most consistent performances and arguably the most successful player to come out of England’s ‘golden generation’, going on to make 107 appearances for his nation.
