Swiss international striker Josip Drmic signed a deal with Bayer Leverkusen yesterday, scotching rumours he was Arsenal bound.
Talk of the 21-year-old's potential Arsenal move was accelerated by former German World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus, who repeatedly claimed inside information over a deal.
Matthaus told Bild last month: "You will see Drmic will go to Arsenal for 8 million - I was right before and I'll be right again."
Except now he has been proven wrong, but already he has issued his mea culpa, admitting he got it wrong.
Matthaus is reported by Swiss website 4-4-2 to have said:
"Yes, I have been misinformed, but I'm a straight man and say, yeah, I was wrong."
Yet he did add that he still felt part of his argument was correct, adding: "Drmic held talks with Arsenal, but apparently has then been convinced to Leverkusen."
Whether that proves to be accurate or not, if the club were interested, it's time for Arsenal to switch attention to new targets.
