Chelsea fans confused on Twitter over Cole World Cup snub - 'Shaw isn't ready!'

Chelsea star Ashley Cole has retired from international football after learning he won't go to the World Cup this summer.

Ashley Cole wasted no time in announcing his international retirement following Roy Hodgson’s decision not include the Chelsea icon in his World Cup squad to go to Brazil.

Cole took to Twitter to announce the news, which is remarkable considering Cole has been in superb form for the Blues since Jose Mourinho brought him back into the first team over the closing weeks of the season.

England look set to go into the tournament with Everton’s Leighton Baines and Southampton’s Luke Shaw as the two left-back options Hodgson will take to Brazil, but surely there was a place for Cole.

He may not have been at his absolute best this season but his experience of playing for England would have been vital in the high pressure moments during the massive tournament.

Should England make it out of the group stage, there are going to be nail biting moments which could badly affect the younger players in the England squad, where another experienced head would have been an asset rather than a liability.

Hodgson’s decision is reportedly based on an idea that the England team needs to be based around younger players, which some fans will say is just what’s needed to move the side forward.

However, Cole has physically proved in important games for Chelsea that he can still be a top class performer, with a solid performance away against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League a good example.

Cole’s tears in his last Chelsea home game suggest he’s unlikely to be offered a new deal by the club so it’s a very important summer for the defender.

Liverpool are reportedly the team closest to making an offer for Cole’s services this summer and he could jump at the chance to get something sorted out quickly before sitting back and watching the tournament in Brazil this summer.

Here’s what Chelsea fans have made of the decision on Twitter.
