What does the future hold for Tottenham outcast?

Sandro KO Gomes

Rumours linking Sandro with a move to Brazil’s Sao Paulo create unease among many Spurs fans.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Sandro’s revelation that he is happy to be linked with a move to Sao Paulo is certainly going to spark concerns among many of the club’s supporters.

What has been a failed 2013-14 campaign, Spurs could now lose one of the fan favourites - a player who has endeared himself with a self-cultivated ‘Beast’ image off the pitch and strong performances on it.

The former Internacional man’s absence through injury at a crunch time last season was keenly felt when Spurs fell narrowly short of fourth place in the Premier League, so many were surprised when he failed to re-establish himself in manager Tim Sherwood’s plans following his recovery from a calf problem this term.

The Twitter spat surrounding a 3-1 home win over Fulham when the Brazil international asserted that injury was not the reason for his omission created the sense among the pro-Sandro camp that the player had been deliberately isolated. Sherwood’s and Les Ferdinand’s disparaging remarks about defensive midfielders were dug up by their detractors to question their managerial abilities.

Many Tottenham fans feel that Sandro remains a valuable asset despite his struggles this season. He adds much-needed stability to midfield with his tackling and interceptions, and chips in with the odd long-range strikes such as December’s screamer against Manchester United.

A fresh start seems all but certain for Sandro next season, but will it be at Spurs, Sao Paulo or elsewhere? Let’s wait and watch.
