Former Crystal Palace manager Ian Holloway believes that Yaya Toure is not as good as Luis Suarez.
Holloway argues that even though the Manchester City midfielder is one of the top players in the world, he is not in the same bracket as Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.
According to the ex-Blackpool boss, the Ivory Coast international does not have the consistency needed to assert himself as one of the best, claiming that the former Barcelona midfielder often “goes through the motions” and “has disappeared in games when the Citizens have needed some defensive discipline and sheer hard work”.
Holloway also believes that at times Toure has simply “got bored” and switched off because it got “all too easy for him”. The hunger to do more and push himself to the limit is missing in Toure, according to the Englishman, something that the likes of Messi and Ronaldo demonstrate even after scoring a hat-trick.
This is an interesting point of view and something that is worth looking into. Toure has had some mediocre games this season, but then again, which player doesn’t. Moreover, under manager Manuel Pellegrini this season, the City midfielder has been given the freedom to push forward, with Fernandinho hanging in behind, and has scored 20 league goals. But has he done enough defensively to help out his team? It is open for debate.
Toure recently missed out on the PFA Player of the Year award to Luis Suarez, who has scored more than 30 goals in all competition this season. Many felt that the 30-year-old former Monaco star deserved to win the accolade, but the form of the Liverpool forward is hard to ignore.
Nevertheless, Toure has been a star of City’s Premier League campaign this season, and one cannot deny that.
