Southampton 1-1 Manchester United: Mata saves away side's blushes

Southampton Football Club

Southampton and Manchester United drew 1-1 at St Mary's on Sunday afternoon.

Ryan Giggs ended his spell as interim manager of Manchester United with a 1-1 draw away to Southampton.

The hosts took the lead in the 28th minute, when striker Rickie Lambert beat David de Gea after appearing to foul Nemanja Vidic in the build-up.  But the goal was allowed, and the Saints held the lead until Juan Mata equalised nine minutes after the re-start.

The Spaniard - who has really found his feet following his club-record signing in January - curled in a 25-yard free-kick to level matters.  And that was how it remained.

The result means United will not be involved in European competition next season, with Tottenham Hotspur holding on for the final Europa League spot.  But the game was another sign that the Saints are heading in the right direction, provided they can keep hold of their much-heralded young stars.

The result means Southampton finish the campaign in eighth, while United end it one place and eight points above them.
