There were many permutations to the final day of the Bundesliga season yesterday. Relegation, Champions League, Europa League … top goalscorer?
In an interesting battle it was Mario Mandzukic and Robert Lewandowski who went into yesterday’s final game of the season level on 18 goals. The battle for top goalscorer between the pair obviously carried extra significance as Lewandowski looks like replacing the Croatian striker at the Allianz Arena.
Lewandowski’s game against Hertha Berlin was his final one for Dortmund before leaving for Bayern Munich on a Bosman transfer this summer. But he wanted to end his time with Die Schwarzgelben in positive fashion - and didn't he do just that.
Lewandowski scored a brace in a 4-0 win against the capital club, taking his Bundesliga tally to 20 for the season while Mandzukic failed to notch for the Bavarian outfit - meaning Lewnadowski claims the top scorer bragging rights over his future team-mate.
And one person pleased with his efforts was Arsenal stopper Wojciech Szczesny. The Poland international team-mate of the striking machine has shown his friendship with the Bayern-bound striker in the past - Facebooking him a message before the pair once met in an Arsenal tie and even attempting to convince him to sign for Arsenal.
However yesterday he was simply congratulating his friend on an excellent season.
Lewandowski will hope to finish it off by denying his future colleagues the domestic double - as Dortmund take on Bayern in the DFB-Pokal final next Saturday.
