Liverpool handed timely boost as £20m target appears to wave goodbye to fans

Adam Lallana

Southampton playmaker Adam Lallana appeared to wave goodbye to Saints fans after their game with Manchester United today.

Lallana, who turned 26 yesterday, joined the Saints from Bournemouth back in 2000 as a 12-year-old, and has gone on to make over 250 appearances at St. Mary's Stadium, always impressing with his dribbling and creativity - but it's this season where he has really become a star.

The midfielder is now an England international and looks assured of a place in Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad for this summer's trip to Brazil after a superb season with nine goals and six assists, often playing as the driving force in Mauricio Pochettino's side.

But those impressive displays have unsurprisingly attracted interest from elsewhere, and whilst Manchester United have been linked with a summer swoop for Lallana, it's Liverpool who have become favourites for his signature, as Brendan Rodgers' side reportedly line up a £20m move.

The Reds missed out on the title after dropping points to Chelsea and Crystal Palace in recent weeks, and after watching Manchester City reclaim the Premier League title today, there is a sense of disappointment around Anfield despite finishing second in a superb season.

Fans are in need of some positivity tonight after today's results, and could have been handed a boost in their chase to sign Lallana as the Southampton star appeared to wave goodbye to Saints fans after the final whistle of today's game against Manchester United.

This could simply be seen as thanking them for their support this season, but it will generate rumours that Lallana was saying goodbye for good - particularly after his comments in today's programme suggesting that he will ponder his future this summer.

"I'm ambitious. I want to one day play in Champions League and compete for Premier League title," said Lallana, "I got emotional (at the awards) because it's a journey I couldn't have dreamed of but I'm not saying this is the end by any means. There are going to be some decisions to make in the summer and maybe it all hit home a little bit when I was speaking," he added.

With Champions League football now on offer at Liverpool, is Rodgers now poised to land the England star this summer?
