Chelsea and Liverpool 'Next Ozil' target 'proud' of Bayern interest

Hakan Calhanoglu has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich today.

Last month it was revealed that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been on a German scouting mission to check out Turkish international Hakan Calhanoglu of Hamburg SV.

Calhanoglu even addressed the rumours, stating:

"A great honour for me when a coach of such a great club is watching me. This is encouraging in a relegation battle. [However] only the successful relegation is currently important to me.”

Not long after this and Chelsea were also linked with the player - dubbed the ‘next Mesut Ozil’.

He has been the only shining light for Hamburg this season - one of the best performing players in the Bundesliga in one of the worst performing sides.

He recently signed a new deal with the club but if HSV are relegated it is hard to see a player this talented hanging around. They fought off instant relegation on the final game of the Bundesliga season today, thanks to results going their way elsewhere after a 3-2 loss at Mainz. Now they face Greuther Furth or Paderborn in a promotion playoff.

Regardless, because of Hamburg’s financial problems, a sale seems likely this summer - and the two Premier League sides have pretty formidable competition.

It has been reported this weekend by Bild that Bayern Munich are entering the race for the player - as they look to add some extra talent to their already thriving attacking midfield area.

And Calhanoglu, who has already talked up moves to Galatasaray and Liverpool this season (but interestingly not Arsenal, whom he played down talk of a potential transfer) has had his say.

He said of the interest this morning:

"The interest motivates me even more. I'm proud of it."

With Hamburg now on the brink of relegation he is all set to become available and it looks like quite a battle is about to ensue for his coveted services.
