England international left-back Ashley Cole is coming to the end of his Chelsea contract, with his future still undecided.
Current club Chelsea have reportedly offered the 33-year-old a one-year contract extension, but with less money and the probability of starting the season behind Cesar Azpilicueta in the pecking order, Ashley Cole may look elsewhere.
A number of clubs have taken an interest, including the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool, and if recent reports are to be believed, another Premier League giant is willing to take him off the Blues’ hands.
According to the Mirror, Manchester City have joined the race for his signature. The Citizens are expecting another summer of big changes, despite the likelihood of winning the Premier League to go along with their previous League Cup success.
Recent reports from UEFA have revealed City are currently out of line with the requirements, and the acquisition of Ashley Cole may go some way to eradicating that.
On the field, Manchester City have Gael Clichy and Aleksandar Kolarov as left-back options in the squad. However, with the latter regularly linked with a move away from the club, perhaps the Serbian could be sold to make way for the more experienced Ashley Cole as the club looks to finally make an impression on the European scale.
The Chelsea star has a number of Champions League game under his belt, and his experience in the latter stages would certainly be beneficial to Manuel Pellegrini’s men.
Despite Ashley Cole receiving torrid abuse for making his controversial move to Chelsea in 2006, his trophy cabinet including a Premier League title, four FA Cups, a Europa League honour and a Champions League medal in 2012 proves it was definitely the right decision.
