Former Liverpool right-back Alvaro Arbeloa has a rough history with Chelsea target Diego Costa following a number of on-field battles.
The strong centre-forward is a menace for defenders, and he certainly enjoys the rough and tumble and personal battles that accompany him whilst out on the pitch.
In recent Real Madrid-Atletico Madrid clashes, Diego Costa caused so much hassle for Alvaro Arbeloa, Pepe and Sergio Ramos, that the latter admitted he would land one on the striker if needs be – only weeks before Diego Costa joined up with the Real Madrid star in the Spanish national team set-up.
In an interview with Spanish press AS, Alvaro Arbeloa admitted that football often takes over and the bad-blood between the players is just a sign of wanting to win – citing the crazy things Diego Costa does before revealing that he’d love a player of his ilk on his team.
He said: “I’m a football player and I go out thinking in what’s best for my team. I had a father who when we watched games on the telly he’d say 'look, you can’t do this'.”
“I believe there are situations where I can only say 'what do you want me to say?'”
“You see a player like Diego Costa and you think 'man, look at the things this guy does,' but I’d like a Diego Costa in my team – a ball-breaker that goes in for everything and crashes against the world.”
Diego Costa has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea this summer, with some reports in Spain suggesting that the Blues have a €60m agreement to sign him ahead of next summer.
In 33 La Liga starts, the 25-year-old has netted an impressive 27 goals, just a few shy of Cristiano Ronaldo at the top of Spain’s scoring charts.
In a season where Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has bemoaned his striker’s lack of killer instincts, a player of Diego Costa’s ilk – and his never-say-die attitude - arriving at Stamford Bridge will certainly bring back memories of a certain Didier Drogba in his prime.
