The top five players linked with signing for Liverpool this week: Lallana, Schmelzer and more

Southampton, Borussia Dortmund, FC Porto, Newcastle United and PSV stars all feature.

Brendan Rodgers has arguably the most difficult task of any Premier League manager this summer, as he tries to drastically improve his Liverpool squad ahead of the Champions League next season.

He’ll be faced with several challenges in the transfer market at the end of the season because he doesn’t have the resources which are enjoyed by some of the club’s main rivals.

Here are five of the best players the club have been linked with this week.

Adam Lallana (Southampton)

Liverpool’s interest in the Southampton star has been well documented this week, with the Reds gaining hope as he apparently prefers a move to them ahead of a trip to Old Trafford. The deal could cost £25 million, which would be a significant chunk of Rodgers’ summer budget.

Marcel Schmelzer (Borussia Dortmund)

One area which Rodgers will have to address this summer is left-back. The injury to Jose Enrique has left the boss playing right sided defenders on the left hand side of the defence. Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan have both played well but a naturally left footed player will provide balance and Schmelzer has admitted he’s flattered by the links.

Juan Iturbe (FC Porto)

Iturbe has been linked with Liverpool consistently over the second half of the season. On loan at Hellas Verona, he could crave the stability and consistency of regular first team football at Anfield. However, Rodgers already has creative midfielders in his squad.

Hatem Ben Arfa (Newcastle United)

The Metro claims Liverpool are interested in signing the Frenchman who could fill in down the left hand side of their midfield next season. However, it could be a difficult deal for the Reds to pull off with Alan Pardew likely to try and protect one of his best players.

Zakaria Bakkali (PSV Eindhoven)

The teenager has reportedly been told to sign a new contract with the Dutch club or be forced out. Liverpool will be hoping it’s the latter. He’s been linked with a string of top European clubs including Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Arsenal. Considering Rodgers’ talent in using and developing younger players, it could be a masterstroke.
