On this day: Moyes chosen, Draxler signs new deal and Rooney targeted

David Moyes Interview - 23/02/2014

On the 9th May 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Everton, Chelsea and Manchester United.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 9th May 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 9th May 2013…

The Chosen One

David Moyes was named as successor to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. The legendary manager announced his retirement just the day before and after 24 hours of rife speculation the Everton boss and bookies favourite was confirmed in the role.

Sir Alex said at the time:

“We unanimously agreed on David Moyes. David is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic. I've admired his work for a long time and approached him as far back as 1998 to discuss the position of assistant manager here. There is no question he has all the qualities we expect of a manager at this club."

A year on and Moyes is gone, sacked after a poor season at the club in which no silverware and potentially no European qualification is on offer.

We want Roo

Chelsea were after Wayne Rooney after reports he had handed in a transfer request at United.

Sir Alex Ferguson said Rooney wanted to leave - but the arrival of Moyes seemed to change everything.

Chelsea’s pursuit of Rooney went on until the summer but Rooney signed a massive new deal at United this season - securing his long term future.

2018 Draxler

Arsenal’s interest in Julian Draxler is nothing new and a year ago today the German international signed a new deal at Schalke 04.

The talented playmaker was being linked with moves to Chelsea, Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund and the deal was announced by a succession of lorries passing through Gelsenkirchen in a massive PR stunt.

His new deal runs until 2018 - but also contains an interesting release clause. Draxler can leave the club for a fee of £37 million. However Arsenal’s interest in the player is said to have cooled.
