Liverpool's player of the month announced for April - not Suarez

Raheem Sterling

One player impressed Liverpool supporters more than any other, winning his first Player of the Month award.

April was a month that seemed so likely to offer those following Liverpool football club the very biggest of prizes at its end, with many of its days seeming to usher the club closer and closer to an unlikely Premier League title.

That charge has infamously fallen a little flat since the Anfield loss to Chelsea, and barring a miracle in their favour, the Reds will have to settle for second place this season, but there were still plenty of strong performers to pick from when considering the club's player of the month.

And the man that walked away with the award, which is voted for by Liverpool fans, beating forwards Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge to the title, was fleet fitted winger Raheem Sterling.

The England man managed to net 3 goals over the course of April, as well as providing assist, as the Reds won 3 out of 4 games.

Speaking to the Liverpool website, Sterling said: "When the fans appreciate what you've been doing on the pitch it's a real boost for you. I'm really grateful to be the fans' pick this month and I'm very happy to receive the award.

"In terms of my best game in April, I would say the team win against Manchester City was a real big game for us, so I would say as a collective, that was a really good win. To get on the score-sheet makes it the best game of the month for me."

It wasn't the first award Sterling has won for his performances this season, having picked up the club's Young Player of the Season trophy last week.
