How Wenger has been planning Javi Martinez swoop for over two years

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been watching Javi Martinez closely for well over two years.

Several national newspapers have now reported that Arsenal have made an official enquiry to Bayern Munich over the potential transfer of midfielder Javi Martinez.

Arsene Wenger has been tracking Martinez from his days back with Athletic Bilbao before he committed to a high profile move to the Allianz Arena.

The one area in Arsenal’s midfield, which fans agree could use improving, is that holding position and getting someone into the side with quality in possession, intimidation and a little bit of grit in front of the back four.

Martinez has found first team football hard to come by at Bayern Munich and the possibility that he could become the latest high profile Arsenal signing is becoming a real possibility.

He’s made just 17 Bundesliga appearances, four of which have come as a substitute and Arsenal can play on that with a clear position in front of their back four, not in the centre of defence which is how Pep Guardiola has recently used the Spaniard.

Mathieu Flamini has done a respectable job in that position this season but is unable to play a high ratio of games close together while Mikel Arteta lacks a little pace and energy in the holding role.

Cast your mind back to April 2012 and other than another season without silverware, one of the things Arsenal fans were talking about was the Frenchman’s initial £10 million interest in this very player.

“Wenger has made reinforcing the holding midfield position one of his transfer priorities this summer and sent a scout to watch Martinez during Bilbao’s Europa League semi-final win over Sporting Lisbon on Thursday night,” wrote the Daily Telegraph.

Wenger now has a very detailed knowledge of the player and is unlikely to have stopped watching him because of his move to the German champions. He’ll know the fine details over how Martinez plays and the current reports suggest he’s a player that Wenger very much wants.

Whether he’s the man to get stuck into that Arsenal midfield, bang heads together and provide that Patrick Vieira grit is difficult to judge but he can’t do the current squad any harm at all.
