Why Liverpool must capture Barca’s 22-year-old star

Crisitan Tello looks set to leave Barcelona this summer. Here's why Liverpool should make him a priority over the coming months.

Liverpool have approached Barcelona over a deal to sign winger Cristian Tello at the end of the season, if recent reports are to be believed. The Reds were in talks to sign the 22-year-old last summer, only for the player to end up signing a new contract at the Nou Camp, but now Brendan Rodgers could finally land the talented youngster.

Tello isn’t receiving the game time he requires with the Catalan Giants, having made just 29 appearances, starting on just six occasions, and, with Luis Enrique set to become the new Barca head coach, his game time could be further restricted. The Spaniard never really considered him as one of his first choice players while in charge of the B team and this could also be the case next season.

Suggestions that he is becoming increasingly unsettled at Barca were confirmed on the weekend, after a row with Coach Tato Martino, which was captured on TV. This could be the final nail in the coffin for the Spaniard whose days at the Nou Camp seem significantly numbered.

He is perfect for the Brendan Rodgers system of fast, free-flowing, counter-attacking football. It’s no coincidence that he is being coveted by a number of Europe’s top clubs (Arsenal and PSG are also said to be interested). Similar to Philippe Coutinho during his time at Inter Milan, he has tremendous ability, he is just waiting on the opportunity to unleash this. Liverpool would offer him the opportunity to do so.

Squad depth will be imperative heading into next season, especially with the Champions League to contend for. While Tello is likely to compete with Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling for regular first team football, the trio will all receive their fair share of action simply due to an increased fixture list. Tello does have some form of European experience, although this limited. However, having played in La Liga for three seasons now, he will be well equipped to face the elite Spanish sides.

Despite being right footed, Tello is more adept on the left. He uses his pace and quick feet to terrorise opposition defenders, he excels at cutting inside from the wing and stroking the ball past the opposition goalkeeper. He is an impressive talent, with huge potential, and he will excel whilst playing in the Reds’ high-charged attack.

The Spaniard offers versatility, considering his ability to play as a striker. Essentially, he is adaptable to the point that he could play anywhere across the front line or in the midfield. With this in mind, he would offer suitable cover for Luiz Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Fabio Borini. As a youth player he once scored 64 goals in a single campaign. It’s hard to imagine him not being a success at Anfield.

According to Talk Sport, the situation is as favourable for Liverpool as it has ever been. Tello signed a new deal in the summer of 2013 with a buyout clause of €25m. His contract stipulates that the clause would rise to €30m if he plays 30 more games for Barcelona, then once more to €35m if he plays 50.

Nonetheless, the Metro have indicated that a deal of £8m could be agreed between the two clubs, with Barca planning a mass-clearance throughout the summer months. If Brendan Rodgers want to sign him then now is indeed the time.
