On Tuesday night a little bit of magic returned to Old Trafford as ‘Giggy’s Greenhorns’ did the business against Hull City in a 3-1 win to end a miserable season at home.
On the road performances have been OK, better than that, good some might say. But it is Manchester United’s dismal attempts at the Theatre of Dreams that has really been the disappointing stain on their season.
James Wilson though shone through this week - scoring a brace on debut to announce his name on the world stage.
It was a performance that had first-team coach and former player Phil Neville Tweeting:
You can have the best academy set ups but the test is to put them in 1st team consistently- stick with them trust them and believe in them!— phil neville18 (@fizzer18) May 6, 2014
Chuba Akpom retweeted the post yesterday. Akpom had a wonderful season last term banging in the goals for Arsenal’s youth team and he carried that form into pre-season.
But this season has been up and down for the talented goal-getter. He didn’t receive the playing time necessary to make an impact at Brentford or Coventry City on loan deals but has scored for Arsenal’s youngsters again - enjoying a prolific time in the UEFA Youth League.
There is no doubting his ability, and nurtured the right way the 18-year-old has the potential to bang in the sort of goals Ian Wright did at the club - and that is not an exaggeration.
He agrees with Neville’s Tweet and just like Wilson he just needs to be given the opportunity to shine.
It may be too late to have an impact this season - but next term could be the year Akpom has his James Wilson moment.
