Chelsea’s top scoring strikers this season;
Look away now as it is not a pretty table if you are a Chelsea fan.
The decision to loan out Belgium international Romelu Lukaku on Transfer Deadline Day last summer has increasingly looked a poor one from Jose Mourinho - as at Everton he has outperformed the Chelsea trio of Eto’o, Ba and Torres consistently all season.
And it should not have come as a surprise.
He was on fire for West Brom in 2012-13 and Chelsea did spend a silly amount of money to sign him - yet so far he has not been given a chance at the club.
Now his future is in doubt, as it is not yet known if Mourinho wants him back next season - or if Lukaku wants to return.
Everton’s failure to make it into the Champions League will not have helped their cause in pursuit of the giant striker - but saying that Lukaku has certainly enjoyed his time at the club.
Last night Everton handed out their annual awards - with right-back Seamus Coleman beating Lukaku to the Player of the Year gong. But when Lukaku did speak to the fans and peers in attendance he stated his time at Everton had been “the best experience I've had since I started playing football”.
Everton are going to struggle to get hold of the player. Mourinho is set to allow Eto’o to leave on a free while Ba and Torres both could depart this summer.
Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa is expected to sign and Lukaku will surely be used next season - along with perhaps another signing or one of Torres and Ba.
But if Chelsea do not give Lukaku the assurances he needs no Everton fan would begrudge him making his ‘best experience’ a permanent arrangement.
