The 29-year-old Brazilian midfielder has been in fine form for Atleico Madrid under Diego Simeone this term, contributing to a sensational season, which could see the Spanish outfit win the La Liga title and the UEFA Champions League.
Diego has been a key part of the Argentine coach’s side, functioning as a central and attacking midfielder behind the strike force of Diego Costa and David Villa in a midfield boasting an array of creative talents like Koke, Arda Turan, Christian Rodriguez, Raul Garcia, Jose Sosa, and Adrian.
The former Brazil international arrived in the Spanish capital after a loan spell from Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg where he spent four years following spells with Juventus, Werder Bremen, Porto and Santos where he was trained as a youngster in his homeland.
He has scored 7 goals and made four assists across all competitions for Atletico Madrid this term, including a goal against Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinals.
However, it is expected that Diego will leave the Vincente Calderon Stadium at the end of the season when his contract expires and, according to reports in the Daily Mail, he will be ‘offered’ to Arsenal on a free transfer.
Furthermore, Diego could well find himself amongst friends should he make a move to the Emirates – his three year spell at Werder Bremen coincided with the Gunners’ club record signing Mesut Ozil’s development at the Bundesliga side. The Germany international spent two years between 2008 and 2010 at Werder Bremen where he made his name before signing for Real Madrid in 2010. Thought the pair might have been rivals in the Spanish capital they were part of the Werder Bremen team that won the DFB-Pokal in 2008/09 and were runners up in the UEFA Cup of the same year.
