Gary Lineker backs Everton star linked with Chelsea for World Cup

Three Lions close

The former Three Lions striker has stated that John Stones could be an option for Roy Hodgson this summer.

With Phil Jones picking up an injury in midweek and England’s World Cup campaign a month away, Roy Hodgson has some selection dilemmas ahead of naming his squad for the tournament in Brazil.

Although the Manchester United man may well still make the cut, there are a number of options at centre-back that are yet to be assessed.

Former England striker Gary Lineker has stated that he believes Everton youngster John Stones is in with a shout of inclusion after an impressive stint in the Toffees’ first-team this term.

"The only one I might take a chance on, because we are so short in central defence, is Stones,” Lineker is quoted as saying by The Mirror.

"I really like him - he has got a lot about him. Sometimes central defenders need a little bit more experience than players in other positions because of the extra discipline and the nature of that particular role.

"But is he worth a gamble? Well, if England lose another one - if Phil Jones doesn't make it, for example - what else have we got?

“We have got Cahill and Jagielka, who have played together quite a lot, and then there is Steven Caulker, who struggles a little bit on the turn. We are short in that position."

Stones has looked assured in Roberto Martinez’s back four this season and also has the ability to play at right-back also.

The youngster’s progress has led to suggestions that Chelsea are ready to make a big-money bid for the Everton star this summer.
