United fans are unanimous in praise for their Serbian centre-back on social media site, Twitter, after his last game at Old Trafford
It was an emotional farewell as Nemanja Vidic participated in his last game at Old Trafford, where he has played his club football for the past eight years.
After coming off the bench to replace the injured Phil Jones early on in the game, Vidic was as solid as ever at the heart of United’s defence in their 3-1 victory over Hull City.
He would have been encouraged by what he saw in the game, too, as he passed the baton onto the future generations.
Ryan Giggs started with a youthful attacking line-up, handing debuts to James Wilson and Tom Lawrence, who has spent most of this season out on loan in the Football League.
And the former certainly grasped his opportunity to impress, blasting a volley into the back to provide United the lead, before putting United firmly into the lead with his second, by prodding in a rebound after Marouane Fellaini's initial shot was saved.
Wilson was unable to complete his hat-trick as he was substituted soon after bagging his brace for Robin van Persie, who completed the scoring for the home side, after Matty Fryatt had pulled one back for Hull and, in-turn, ruined Vidic's hopes of a clean-sheet on his final Old Trafford appearance.
The Serb, who has made 299 appearances for the Red Devils, won't be able to see first-hand how his teammates progress, though, as he is set for pastures new in the summer, when his contract at United expires.
He will, however, always be remembered at Old Trafford, where he has made a name for himself as one of the finest defenders in the Premier League.
Robust, brave and powerful, the 32-year-old has been a regular starter in the Reds’ team ever since his arrival from Spartak Moscow in 2006.
The reception he got at Old Trafford last night was superb and goes some way to doing justice to how fondly he will be remembered on his departure.
But it wasn’t just inside the stadium where he was being warmly greeted. Twitter was also full of effusive praise for Vidic.
Below are a selection of the best tweets from Manchester United fans, celebrating Vidic’s career at Old Trafford.
